Creating the wedding of your dreams regardless of your budget is completely doable! Your wedding decor is the largest component of designing your wedding so we want to help you figure out where and how to obtain all of the decor that will make your wedding:

  • unique
  • a true reflection of your personal style
  • utterly fabulous
  • affordable

And by the way, affordable means whatever works for you and your budget. So let’s dive into this article and look at the simplest and most cost efficient ways to make your wedding decor happen.

5 Best Wedding Decor Resources

  1. Hobby Lobby or Michaels or JoAnn Fabrics (Okay, so that’s 3 resources in 1 but they’re all pretty similar!) Best local place to purchase crafty components for making your own decor. Think escort cards, table numbers/names, display table decor, decor to go along with your reception table  centerpieces. Also, a whole lot of ready-to-go decor and signage you can purchase; no assembly required!
  2. Online Resources such as  www.lightinthebox.com, www.theweddingoutlet.com, and www.save-on-crafts.com are fantastic websites to visit and gather your DIY supplies! Just be sure to order early, just in case you need to return anything because it’s just not “right”.
  3. Local Thrift Stores. Thrift stores are a great place to pick-up, china, sterling silver serving pieces and small furniture pieces you may want to use for your ceremony entrance, altar table, guest book table, etc. Pieces can be easily painted or refinished to create something completely transformed. But don’t try to take on too much when it comes to furniture. You don’t want to stress yourself out with too many DIY projects; keep it simple!
  4. Rentals, Rentals, Rentals. Well I had to be sure you are aware of providers such as our company Yours For Your Day. Specialty rentals are a great way to get the decor elements and furniture you need without the hassle of finding pieces to do yourself and then figure out what to do with all of them after the wedding!
  5. Craigslist offers a wealth of opportunity to find decor items you may need. Quite often, couples list various decor elements that they pulled together for their own wedding at amazing prices and with all of the “work” already done. But take heed! You may be that same couple in a few months having to do the same thing to get rid of all of those once-in-a-lifetime details you no longer have any use for!

There you go, a quick list of resources to get you started on designing your dream wedding. While this just scratches the surface, I’m hoping you can take these options and make them work for you!

But Wait, There’s More!!

Designing your “Best Day Ever” is pretty simple, as long as you “get” wedding decor! Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how many elements of decor there really are, until you have to pull it all together for your big day. Most folks would probably think décor just means decorations and they would be right, but it is so much more than that. I touched on the simplicity of wedding planning and decor decades ago in one of my first articles , but we are far from that simplicity today! When it comes down to it, your décor plays a pivotal role in your big day! Every aspect sets the tone for the event. Your personal style and personality should be the driving factor for all of your décor decisions because after all, you want this event to be spectacular!

First Steps in Decor Design

So let’s start at the beginning. Once you get engaged, one of the very first things you will want to do is set a date, that’s if you have a pretty firm grasp on when you want your wedding to be. Or you will find a venue first because you’ve set it as a high priority and you are flexible with the date. Of course, if you are planning far enough in advance, you shouldn’t have any problem with getting just the right location on just the right date! Whether you realize it or not, picking your venue, your date, and even your wedding dress are some of your first decor decisions! They are the initial building blocks that will set the tone for the overall “feel” of your wedding day!

All other decor elements will then build on those initial decisions and complement the overall experience for both you and your guests. Remember that decor sets the mood, creates atmosphere, and projects your personal style and creativity throughout the ceremony and reception! For that reason, you want to keep some consistency going throughout all decor elements, so let’s talk about some of those now:

Wedding Decor Defined

Theme
(think of it as a common thread)
Color Scheme
(your venue, time of year, time of day can all factor into the colors you use)
Flowers
(you’ll want them to complement both your theme and color scheme)
Lighting
(don’t underestimate the power of great lighting to enhance experience)
Table Decor
(anything that may accompany your centerpieces on your reception tables)
Display Tables/Furniture Pieces
(we’re talking cake/dessert table, memory table, gift table, escort card display, etc.)
Food/Cake/Desserts
(yep, they can all be considered part of your decor and should complement as well)
Tables/Chairs
(sure they’re just tables and chairs but they can play a big part in pulling your overall look together)
Linens/Tableware
(easy ways to highlight theme, color scheme, and style)
Layouts
(you can get mighty creative with your layouts to enhance the look, feel, and flow)

And while the above list is still not all-inclusive, hopefully you can begin to see how everything really does work together to give you cohesiveness throughout every aspect of the day. Your decor design is critical, so you want to be sure that you go into your planning with eyes wide open! As we discussed in our last article on finding the balance between your vision and your budget,  you will want to be mindful of what decor aspects you want to DIY and what aspects you should leave to the experts!

Wedding Design; Keeping the Peace Between Your Vision and Your Budget

Let’s Talk Wedding Design…

Wedding Design | Yours For Your Day | Vintage Rentals | Colorado | Tables and ChairsAs women, we can handle pretty much anything that is thrown at us, or at least we like to think we can! But put a shiny, sparkly, love-filled diamond ring on our finger and watch what we can really do! As soon as we say “Yes!”, our minds are filled with couture wedding gowns and jaw-dropping bouquets, the venue dreams are made of, and a wedding planner who can totally read our mind!

And then reality starts to creep in. That one little pestering factor standing between you and your perfect, dream-filled wedding day: money! Unfortunately, that cash-growing tree has yet to be found and chances are that you are on a budget. No worries, right? You can totally do most of the stuff yourself!

Good girl for believing in yourself. Of course you CAN do it. Good ol’ Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”  But before you pull on that Superwoman cape, do some rational thinking about your other obligations. You know, little things like your job, so you can set realistic expectations for how much you can handle on your own.  I love the feel of a good DIY wedding; you know that so much purpose and character and love goes into each detail. Take into consideration the size of your wedding, the length of your engagement, the amount of help and support you have, and the how much personal time you can dedicate to wedding planning and DIY.

Before You Go It Alone…

One more thing: if you are a wedding-newbie and have never been involved in planning one (like most brides), consider that there a many, many tiny, but so important details that are easily overlooked by an inexperienced bride.  For instance, heaters for an outdoor reception that may be in an area that is warm during the day but quite cool by sundown, like the mountains. The not-so-obvious details are easier to forget about until Grandma is shivering over her soup at dinner.Wedding Design | Yours For Your Day | Vintage Rentals | Colorado | Lounge Furniture | Wedding Decor

We have compiled a short list of things to take into consideration for your wedding design and when contemplating how much DIY to take on.  This is just a list of ideas and should not be considered all inclusive!

  • Length of your engagement
  • Actual “free” time you will have for projects
  • Your organizational and time management skills
  • Your ability to handle stress
  • What help you will have available to you throughout the planning process
  • Your “Day-of” vision; you don’t want to have to worry about a thing or maybe you want to stay busy and completely involved

Join us for a detailed look at all of these considerations and more in the wedding design companion issue of the Yours For Your Day magazine! It’s 15 pages full of so many details and advice; you don’t want to miss out!

Get Me the Jumper Cables…Stat! Recharging Your Inner Batteries

So if I still had a daily planner I carried around with me, that’s what it would look like! Right up there, stuffed to the gills with receipts, memos; just stuff! But I don’t carry one of those any more and I haven’t for decades, thank goodness. So what are we talking about today, besides that sad visual above?
How about recharging your batteries?

Here’s the deal, it’s been a busy start to 2015 for Yours For Your Day : a vintage market, a bridal show, new bookings, and then a styled/inspiration shoot have had us hopping! We’ve also been dealing with some adjustments in our personal life that have been challenging for Warren and I.  So it’s the hectic start to a busy year that got me thinking about what the rest of this year has in store for us. And how are we going to manage it? What do we need to do to stay energized and renewed throughout the year?

Recharging your inner batteries when you feel worn-out and as well-used as this old red wagon.

Most of us feel worn-out and well-used at the end of each day; like that awesome red wagon up there. For us, we’re looking ahead to a year filled with keeping one business moving ahead steadily, another business growing into its own, two (count them two) moves as we prepare to purchase a new home later in the year, two family weddings during our wedding business’s busy season, and as many trips as we can manage to visit our newly relocated family in another state.Whew! Shoot me, shoot me now! And while that may be a quick solution, what we really need to do is recharge our batteries and recharge them often!

Is a cup of coffee next to a fire your way of recharging your inner batteries?

And what challenges are you going through these days? Planning for your wedding, getting ready for a new baby, dealing with a loss, a major relocation, coping with an illness, or are you just busy beyond belief with the average daily aspects of life? What are you going to do to get through it? What have you already done to get past it? The great news is this: we’ve all been wired with rechargeable batteries! (I personally believe it’s a gift from God!)

For me, daily frustrations and a feeling of being overwhelmed with tasks are always tamed by some quiet time to make my “to do” lists.  Yes, just putting it down on my desk calendar or entering it into OneNote does the trick for me! It’s my way of relieving the daily stress.  No lists and I’m a mess! It gives me focus in the morning and gets me ready for the day ahead because even though I should be restored and refreshed in the morning after a good sleep; I seldom am!

But for the bigger stuff in life,  re-energizing for me requires more like a long weekend away with my love (preferably a trip up to the mountains or a getaway to a California beach or Disneyland!) Don’t judge; we absolutely love Disneyland because even with the crowds, we are rejuvenated by tapping into our inner children!

For you it may be alone time, meditation or yoga, it may be surrounding yourself with friends and family, a ride down the mountain covered in freshly fallen snow, it may be writing poetry, a nice afternoon nap, a quiet cup of coffee on the porch, or it may be a stroll through a park or woodland trail, yes even in the snow! Whatever helps you to recharge your batteries, you need to make the time to do just that, and as often as you need it!

Is an afternoon nap your idea of recharging your inner batteries?

The “stuff” filling your life and causing you stress can all wait! Nothing is more important than staying healthy emotionally, spiritually, and physically. We all need to do it for ourselves and we need to do it for those who love and depend upon us.

So what do you do (or what do you need to do) to go about recharging your inner batteries? Please post your favorite way to breathe new life into your soul in the comments below.  I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts! And sharing your thoughts may help someone else figure out where their own jumper cables are and how to use them!

Back Soon,
Shelley

Have It All Image

We Can’t Have It All!

I’ve been absent from the blog for a few weeks now and I apologize for that. We’ve been traveling both for my husband’s business and we also went on a road-trip to look for new items for our Yours For Your Day rentals inventory.

Vintage French Wash Stand
My favorite road-trip find: a vintage french wash stand!

I share something in common with our clients who are planning their events and are completely overwhelmed with all of the choices out there! I absolutely love vintage, weathered, salvaged, rusty & crusty stuff!  And while there’s a whole lotta stuff out there that is wonderful, most of it is just not quite right for our rentals inventory!

Like so many, I also spend a lot of time wandering through Pinterest, various blogs, Facebook posts and tweets looking for all of those amazing “just right” details.

Rustic Table Rentals

Just like our clients who are trying to decide on what they want their big event to look like and the experience they want for their guests, I too am always in the process of evaluating what I want my curated collection to look like and what I want my clients to experience when working with
Yours For Your Day.

So here’s what I do to narrow down the details as I’m adding to my inventory and If you are planning for a big event, you too can use this exercise:

Make a list of all of  the things that are most important to you for your big day. Is it the food, the decor (my personal favorite), the music, the cake, your photos?  Then incorporate those priorities into your desired guest experiences. What do you want your guests to “take away” from each of those aspects of your event? Now take all of those details you’ve been dreaming of and utterly bombarded by, and decide what best fits into your newly incorporated list of priorities. If something doesn’t “fit”, get it off your list. Continue to whittle away at the list until you have aligned all of the “just right” details with your priorities and then focus on making just those details come to life.  Oh, and stop looking for new details after that, you’ll drive yourself crazy!

Possum Belly Table
Ah, there’s more of those “just right” details! Southwest Boho Chic Shoot (See Credits Below)

Anyhow, I thought I would share with you today just a bit of my challenge and how I  go about setting goals for creating my collection of eclectic rentals and how to best meet the expectations of my clients. I hope that you may be able to apply some of what I’ve learned, to planning for your event because… we really are in this together!

Back soon,
Shelley
