  • unique

  • utterly fabulous
  • affordable

And by the way, affordable means whatever works for you and your budget. So let’s dive into this article and look at the simplest and most cost efficient ways to make your wedding decor happen.

5 Best Wedding Decor Resources

  1. Hobby Lobby or Michaels or JoAnn Fabrics (Okay, so that’s 3 resources in 1 but they’re all pretty similar!) Best local place to purchase crafty components for making your own decor. Think escort cards, table numbers/names, display table decor, decor to go along with your reception table  centerpieces. Also, a whole lot of ready-to-go decor and signage you can purchase; no assembly required!
  2. Online Resources such as  www.lightinthebox.com, www.theweddingoutlet.com, and www.save-on-crafts.com are fantastic websites to visit and gather your DIY supplies! Just be sure to order early, just in case you need to return anything because it’s just not “right”.
  3. Local Thrift Stores. Thrift stores are a great place to pick-up, china, sterling silver serving pieces and small furniture pieces you may want to use for your ceremony entrance, altar table, guest book table, etc. Pieces can be easily painted or refinished to create something completely transformed. But don’t try to take on too much when it comes to furniture. You don’t want to stress yourself out with too many DIY projects; keep it simple!
  4. Rentals, Rentals, Rentals. Well I had to be sure you are aware of providers such as our company Yours For Your Day. Specialty rentals are a great way to get the decor elements and furniture you need without the hassle of finding pieces to do yourself and then figure out what to do with all of them after the wedding!
  5. Craigslist offers a wealth of opportunity to find decor items you may need. Quite often, couples list various decor elements that they pulled together for their own wedding at amazing prices and with all of the “work” already done. But take heed! You may be that same couple in a few months having to do the same thing to get rid of all of those once-in-a-lifetime details you no longer have any use for!

There you go, a quick list of resources to get you started on designing your dream wedding. While this just scratches the surface, I’m hoping you can take these options and make them work for you!

But Wait, There’s More!!

Wedding Decor and Weather!

Wedding decor and weather; where’s this conversation going you may ask? Well, it is a beautiful day out today and all of this Colorado unseasonably warm and dry weather got me thinking. Let me first preface this discussion by saying that I love winter weather here.  Everyone who lives here knows, everyone else out there has our winter weather all wrong. We get beautiful blue skies most all the time, mild temperatures, and while snow can be challenging now and then, we’re never buried in it for any length of time! And yeah, moisture is a good thing!

What Does This Have to do with Wedding Decor?

Okay, so it’s warm and dry out and I thought it would be a good time to talk about where you are in your wedding design and make some suggestions on how to best utilize this weather for your planning process. So here are 3 suggestions for you:

Visit Your Venue

  1. If you’ve already booked your outdoor venue, this might be the perfect time to schedule another visit and take a look around without the snow on the ground. Sure you’ll have to imagine leaves on some of the trees but seeing your venue snow-less may be just what you need to start sparking some new visions of how to use your wedding decor. And if you haven’t yet booked your venue, now’s the time to get out there and start looking around! Take advantage of the weather now because we all know there’s more snow coming!

    Do Some Planning

  2. Take some time to get out and enjoy the weather and allow it to free-up your creativity. Go alone or go with your fiance and find a quiet spot in a park somewhere, spread out a blanket, and let the thoughts flow! Dream-up all of the details that will fulfill your vision of how you want your wedding day to look, feel, and be remembered. Then start to put together your game-plan of how you will acquire all of the decor details. Decide which ones you’ll take on yourself and which ones you will leave to the experts. Don’t think about anything else! This is your opportunity to breathe in some fresh air, behold the wonders around you, and dig into your overall wedding design. If you’re working with a planner, ask them to meet-up with you somewhere outside to get everyone’s creative juices flowing! They’ll surely appreciate the time outdoors as well!

    Don’t Do Any Planning!

  3. And now that I just suggested a dedicated trip outdoors to plan for your wedding, I am now going to suggest you schedule time to do anything but think of your wedding! That’s right, get out there together as a couple or just you by yourself (because that can be just what you need), and don’t think about the wedding. Drive up to the mountains for lunch, go to your closest open space for a hike, or go for a bike ride! Anything that will allow you to free your mind of all things wedding! Enjoy a peaceful setting where you can relax, breathe deep, and do nothing but enjoy the scenery and the company of one another or your own soul!

Three simple suggestions to help you get through the process of planning (or not planning) your wedding! Setting aside some outdoor time to focus on the details and some additional time to focus on anything but the wedding, will be just what you need to recharge your batteries and get you focused! Enjoy your time out there but hurry up, I’m sure the snow will hit at any time; it is Colorado after all!

Designing your “Best Day Ever” is pretty simple, as long as you “get” wedding decor! Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how many elements of decor there really are, until you have to pull it all together for your big day. Most folks would probably think décor just means decorations and they would be right, but it is so much more than that. I touched on the simplicity of wedding planning and decor decades ago in one of my first articles , but we are far from that simplicity today! When it comes down to it, your décor plays a pivotal role in your big day! Every aspect sets the tone for the event. Your personal style and personality should be the driving factor for all of your décor decisions because after all, you want this event to be spectacular!

First Steps in Decor Design

So let’s start at the beginning. Once you get engaged, one of the very first things you will want to do is set a date, that’s if you have a pretty firm grasp on when you want your wedding to be. Or you will find a venue first because you’ve set it as a high priority and you are flexible with the date. Of course, if you are planning far enough in advance, you shouldn’t have any problem with getting just the right location on just the right date! Whether you realize it or not, picking your venue, your date, and even your wedding dress are some of your first decor decisions! They are the initial building blocks that will set the tone for the overall “feel” of your wedding day!

All other decor elements will then build on those initial decisions and complement the overall experience for both you and your guests. Remember that decor sets the mood, creates atmosphere, and projects your personal style and creativity throughout the ceremony and reception! For that reason, you want to keep some consistency going throughout all decor elements, so let’s talk about some of those now:

Wedding Decor Defined

Theme
(think of it as a common thread)
Color Scheme
(your venue, time of year, time of day can all factor into the colors you use)
Flowers
(you’ll want them to complement both your theme and color scheme)
Lighting
(don’t underestimate the power of great lighting to enhance experience)
Table Decor
(anything that may accompany your centerpieces on your reception tables)
Display Tables/Furniture Pieces
(we’re talking cake/dessert table, memory table, gift table, escort card display, etc.)
Food/Cake/Desserts
(yep, they can all be considered part of your decor and should complement as well)
Tables/Chairs
(sure they’re just tables and chairs but they can play a big part in pulling your overall look together)
Linens/Tableware
(easy ways to highlight theme, color scheme, and style)
Layouts
(you can get mighty creative with your layouts to enhance the look, feel, and flow)

And while the above list is still not all-inclusive, hopefully you can begin to see how everything really does work together to give you cohesiveness throughout every aspect of the day. Your decor design is critical, so you want to be sure that you go into your planning with eyes wide open! As we discussed in our last article on finding the balance between your vision and your budget,  you will want to be mindful of what decor aspects you want to DIY and what aspects you should leave to the experts!

Wedding Design; Keeping the Peace Between Your Vision and Your Budget

Let’s Talk Wedding Design…

Wedding Design | Yours For Your Day | Vintage Rentals | Colorado | Tables and ChairsAs women, we can handle pretty much anything that is thrown at us, or at least we like to think we can! But put a shiny, sparkly, love-filled diamond ring on our finger and watch what we can really do! As soon as we say “Yes!”, our minds are filled with couture wedding gowns and jaw-dropping bouquets, the venue dreams are made of, and a wedding planner who can totally read our mind!

And then reality starts to creep in. That one little pestering factor standing between you and your perfect, dream-filled wedding day: money! Unfortunately, that cash-growing tree has yet to be found and chances are that you are on a budget. No worries, right? You can totally do most of the stuff yourself!

Good girl for believing in yourself. Of course you CAN do it. Good ol’ Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”  But before you pull on that Superwoman cape, do some rational thinking about your other obligations. You know, little things like your job, so you can set realistic expectations for how much you can handle on your own.  I love the feel of a good DIY wedding; you know that so much purpose and character and love goes into each detail. Take into consideration the size of your wedding, the length of your engagement, the amount of help and support you have, and the how much personal time you can dedicate to wedding planning and DIY.

Before You Go It Alone…

One more thing: if you are a wedding-newbie and have never been involved in planning one (like most brides), consider that there a many, many tiny, but so important details that are easily overlooked by an inexperienced bride.  For instance, heaters for an outdoor reception that may be in an area that is warm during the day but quite cool by sundown, like the mountains. The not-so-obvious details are easier to forget about until Grandma is shivering over her soup at dinner.Wedding Design | Yours For Your Day | Vintage Rentals | Colorado | Lounge Furniture | Wedding Decor

We have compiled a short list of things to take into consideration for your wedding design and when contemplating how much DIY to take on.  This is just a list of ideas and should not be considered all inclusive!

  • Length of your engagement
  • Actual “free” time you will have for projects
  • Your organizational and time management skills
  • Your ability to handle stress
  • What help you will have available to you throughout the planning process
  • Your “Day-of” vision; you don’t want to have to worry about a thing or maybe you want to stay busy and completely involved

Join us for a detailed look at all of these considerations and more in the wedding design companion issue of the Yours For Your Day magazine! It’s 15 pages full of so many details and advice; you don’t want to miss out!

Watch Out For The DIY Bug!

DIY (Do It Yourself) weddings are popular, and for good reason. Luckily, many of today’s trends are focused on rustic and hand-made themes so it’s easy to take-on much of the decor and details yourself, either for budget reasons or just a desire to add a personal touch to the day.

But careful…

Large Rustic Decor

DIY could just as easily stand for “Don’t Implode Yourself” when you try to DIY every detail of the wedding! Your time and effort are worth something; definitely worth their weight in gold when demand on your time is at its highest! All of those really easy DIY projects that you see on Pinterest can sneak up on you and cause you stress during the later stages of your planning. If you’re stressed, you won’t be able to truly enjoy the planning process and even worse, all of that stress may spill over into your big day.  And that would be a bummer!

So it may seem like you only have two options when planning for your wedding; DIY to save money and add a personal touch or “acquire” everything and save on time, effort & stress.

Or… find a happy medium!

Hay Bale Signs

Here’s an exercise for you: go out to Craigslist and search “wedding decor” for your area.  You will undoubtedly see several listings for people who are trying to sell all of their DIY decor from their recent weddings. Two things to take-away from this exercise: if you find a match to your theme, you can purchase the details at a discount from someone else who has already invested all of that time and effort to make them, yay! Or, if you do tackle all of your own DIY decor, you now know that you can go to Craigslist to get rid of everything after the wedding! (Unless you want to find valuable storage space in your home to store all of those lovely details!)

Smart Alternatives: plan for DIY details that you can use around the home or garden after the wedding or give yourself a break and rent details from someone like Yours For Your Day!  (less expensive than purchasing and yes, that was a shameless plug for our company!)

Rusty Bike

My message is this: don’t short-change the value of your time and effort when deciding on your decor.  Please don’t get me wrong, I love DIY weddings.  Our wedding was completely DIY and we loved every aspect of planning for our special day, but it was also a very small and intimate event, so the details were completely manageable.

Welcome Sign

If you have been bitten by the DIY bug, just go into your planning with eyes wide open and you’ll be fine.  Fully and honestly evaluate your available time and personal skill set.  And don’t beat yourself up if you decide you may not be up for the challenge of a full DIY event.  Pat yourself on the back for being smart and savvy enough to respect and honor your limitations! You can always pick a few projects that mean the most to you like guest favors, aisle decor, or the guest book and then rent or purchase the other details. You’ll still get the same DIY feel to your themed event, but without all of the stress and investment of your precious time!

Back soon,
Shelley
