Designing your “Best Day Ever” is pretty simple, as long as you “get” wedding decor! Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how many elements of decor there really are, until you have to pull it all together for your big day. Most folks would probably think décor just means decorations and they would be right, but it is so much more than that. I touched on the simplicity of wedding planning and decor decades ago in one of my first articles , but we are far from that simplicity today! When it comes down to it, your décor plays a pivotal role in your big day! Every aspect sets the tone for the event. Your personal style and personality should be the driving factor for all of your décor decisions because after all, you want this event to be spectacular!
First Steps in Decor Design
So let’s start at the beginning. Once you get engaged, one of the very first things you will want to do is set a date, that’s if you have a pretty firm grasp on when you want your wedding to be. Or you will find a venue first because you’ve set it as a high priority and you are flexible with the date. Of course, if you are planning far enough in advance, you shouldn’t have any problem with getting just the right location on just the right date! Whether you realize it or not, picking your venue, your date, and even your wedding dress are some of your first decor decisions! They are the initial building blocks that will set the tone for the overall “feel” of your wedding day!
All other decor elements will then build on those initial decisions and complement the overall experience for both you and your guests. Remember that decor sets the mood, creates atmosphere, and projects your personal style and creativity throughout the ceremony and reception! For that reason, you want to keep some consistency going throughout all decor elements, so let’s talk about some of those now:
Wedding Decor Defined
(think of it as a common thread)
(your venue, time of year, time of day can all factor into the colors you use)
(you’ll want them to complement both your theme and color scheme)
(don’t underestimate the power of great lighting to enhance experience)
(anything that may accompany your centerpieces on your reception tables)
Display Tables/Furniture Pieces
(we’re talking cake/dessert table, memory table, gift table, escort card display, etc.)
(yep, they can all be considered part of your decor and should complement as well)
(sure they’re just tables and chairs but they can play a big part in pulling your overall look together)
(easy ways to highlight theme, color scheme, and style)
(you can get mighty creative with your layouts to enhance the look, feel, and flow)
And while the above list is still not all-inclusive, hopefully you can begin to see how everything really does work together to give you cohesiveness throughout every aspect of the day. Your decor design is critical, so you want to be sure that you go into your planning with eyes wide open!
